Mumbai: Seven workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) brutally beat up a shopkeeper in the Mira Road area just because he was not speaking in the Marathi language. The video of the incident was made by the accused themselves and went viral on social media. The shocking thing is that all these accused were released on bail within hours of their arrest.

Police detained, then released on bail
According to an NDTV report, the incident took place on July 3 (Thursday evening) when the police detained all seven accused. But within a few hours, they were released on bail. Police say that the sections imposed on these accused have a maximum punishment of up to 7 years, which falls under the category of “bailable offense” according to the law.
The video was made, yet the accused were released
Surprisingly, the attack took place in broad daylight, and the accused themselves made a video of it and uploaded it on social media. Despite this, they were neither detained for long interrogation nor was strict action taken. The police clarified that this is a “non-cognizable offence”, in which prior permission of the magistrate is required for an arrest.
The accused himself clarified, with no embarrassment
According to the report of NDTV, one of the accused, while talking to the media, claimed that the shopkeeper “invited the attack on himself.” The accused neither hid his face nor showed any kind of embarrassment.

The minister said ‘arrested’, but the reality turned out to be something else
Maharashtra government minister Nitesh Rane said in an interview to NDTV that all the accused have been “arrested”. But within minutes of his statement, it came to light that all the accused had already been released on bail.
Questions raised on political pressure and language dispute
This incident has once again highlighted the issue of linguistic intolerance and political patronage in Maharashtra. Despite video evidence and massive outrage on social media, no strict action has been confirmed by the police so far.
